Tiny Helping Hands

Writer's picture: Hannah MyersHannah Myers

I was reminded today that our kids just want to be involved. I was sitting at my desk and staring at the never ending piles of stuff all over. So I pulled up my sleeves and finally decided to tackle everything real fast (that was wishful thinking). In walks the toddler who decided that he wanted to help with the dishes. Now, I was already on edge and overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that I needed to do, so the last thing I wanted to do was slowly do what needed to be done. My dear toddler is very stubborn, so when he gets his mind on something there is little to no budging. Instead of turning on a show or saying no and going into a tantrum, I took a deep breath, pulled up his sleeves and let him rinse the dishes while I loaded everything into the dishwasher.

Did it take longer? Yes.

Did he enjoy helping? Yes.

Did the task get accomplished? Yes.

The point being that, yes it might take longer, but get them involved. Let them help! I saw a reel a while back that said we need to stop waiting to do everything when the kids are sleeping. We need to do the laundry, vacuuming, dishes, cleaning, etc, when the kids are awake. It is important for them to see and be involved in those tasks. It is important they kids see what it takes to have clean things, food to eat, etc.

All of this got me thinking about how his desire to be a part of things as little as washing the dishes is, it's exactly how God feels. He wants to be a part of our lives. In the small moments and the big ones even when we think we can do things quicker and easier without him, he always wants to be there. All we have to do is show up, mess and all and he is there to walk through those moments with us. What a moment it was for me to realize this! It reminded me of how easily it is to take things for granted and that even when I don't think I need God's help… I do!

Until next time friends,

XOXO
